Tarot Reading

Tarot reading is a form of divination and self-reflection that uses a deck of 78 symbolic cards to gain insight into life situations, emotions, relationships, and possible outcomes. It’s not about predicting the future as something fixed, but rather about illuminating choices, patterns, and potentials in the present moment.

The Structure of the Tarot Deck

A standard tarot deck has 78 cards, divided into two main parts:

The Major Arcana (22 cards)

  • Represent major life themes, spiritual lessons, and turning points.
  • Each card symbolizes an archetype (e.g., The Fool, The Lovers, The Tower, The World).

The Major Arcana tell the “soul’s journey” — from innocence and discovery (The Fool) to awakening and fulfillment (The World).

The Minor Arcana (56 cards)

  • Reflect everyday aspects of life — emotions, thoughts, actions, and relationships.
  • Divided into four suits, similar to a deck of playing cards:
    • Cups – emotions, intuition, relationships
    • Wands – action, creativity, passion
    • Swords – intellect, conflict, communication
    • Pentacles (or Coins) – work, money, physical well-being

Each suit has numbered cards (Ace–10) and four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen, and King.

How a Tarot Reading Works

A reading usually involves:

  1. Setting an intention or question – e.g., “What’s blocking me from moving forward?” or “What should I know about this decision?”
  2. Shuffling and drawing cards – the reader may draw one, three, or more cards depending on the spread used.
  3. Interpreting the cards – meaning comes from each card’s symbolism, position, and interaction with others — often guided by intuition.

Common spreads include:

  • One-Card Pull – simple message or daily reflection
  • Three-Card Spread – past / present / future, or situation / challenge / advice
  • Celtic Cross – a more detailed 10-card layout exploring all aspects of a situation

What Tarot Reading Offers

Tarot helps you:

  • Reflect on your current energies and mindset
  • Gain insight into subconscious influences
  • Clarify choices or life direction
  • Connect with intuition and self-awareness
  • Find spiritual or emotional guidance

Spiritual vs. Psychological Views

  • Spiritually, tarot is seen as a sacred mirror — a way for the soul or higher consciousness to speak through symbols.
  • Psychologically, it works as a tool for self-inquiry — like storytelling or imagery that helps access intuition and integrate insight.

Ethics and Limitations

Tarot doesn’t dictate “fate.” It suggests possibilities, patterns, and energies that can shift based on your actions and awareness. Ethical readers avoid fatalistic predictions, focusing instead on empowerment and growth.
